Prepairing Green Bowl Blanks

Rodney LehrBass demonstrated his technique for preparing a green bowl blank. First, he started with a piece of Silver Maple in log form, about 15” in length and 13” diameter. He showed us from both ends a very distinct stress fracture that occurs when timber is cut down. This fracture is from a release in tension built up in the tree and releases when the grain is severed. He laid the log on its side with the fracture running vertically. He then ripped the wood with his chain saw, in 3 places, each side creating a flat faces about ¾” into the log and then right down the fracture. This fracture always runs right through the heart or the pith of the log. “Always remove the heart wood if you want a crack resistant bowl. The heart will crack and it will go right through the bowl”. Effective and simple.

Green Turning

Harry Newman turned a large Silver Maple turning block.  The wood is green and was cut from a log during another demonstration earlier.  The earlier demonstration focused on how to properly analyze and cut a log to get the most usable wood and eliminate checks and cracks.

Turning green wood can be alot of fun and here in the mountains of West Virginia, it is usaully easy to locate.

Show and Tell

Harry Newman had located some impressive cedar along side the I64 in Virginia,  The wood was cut, stacked and left in the median to begin it decay process.

He and James carried a few trailer loads of it home and set to work turning. Harry brought a rough turned piece for show and tell. James Cox also brought a few items for show and tell. This cedar was cut across the log and full bark was left around the entire bowl. It has a wonderful flower pedal look around the bowl.

"There are several ways to perform the same task. My way might be a little different and your way isn’t necessarily wrong. When we adopt new thing into our tool box, you give yourself new ability. is your tool box empty? .WVWA is a great place to build up your tool box, your talent, and your confidence. When it’s full, well we’ll just add another level. I hope you never stop collecting these tools”.

Rodney LehrBass performed some freestyle “on the spot” turning for us. He installed a 4x3 chunk of aromatic Cedar in a 4 jaw chuck and began to turn. Eventually the piece was shaped to be held in your hand, larger at the base and smaller at the opening. It was then hollowed to 3/8” and final shaping was simple but effective. The piece he turned will be used as a ‘Dice Shaker’ fitted to roll 2 die.  This piece was donated as the demonstration Door Prize.

Discussion

We discussed the new WVWA web site wvwoodturners.com and offered email addresses to our members. If you would like an email address, contact James Cox at jcox@wvwoodturners.com. This email address can be set up to redirect to your existing  email address and all your vwwoodturners email will be in you current email inbox.

We tried out our New Format and Demonstration Layout on the porch area of Neathawk Lumber and felt it was much better. This new layout allowed all to hear and see the demonstration while giving ample space for discussions and show and tell. We also discussed the lower membership turnout to our April and May demonstrations. I suspect that the former layout of our demonstration may have played some roll in the lower turnouts.

We had a new layout for the May demonstration.  We were able to place the lathe between the store entrance and exit doors.  This enabled us to place chairs in the middle to give the demonstration more of a classroom feel.  The members who attended the demonstration seemed to like this layout.

Harry turned the bowl about three times the desired thickness he wants for his finished bowl. He will then allow the bowl the dry using one of the methods discussed at the demonstration. The amount of time it takes to dry will vary from a few weeks to months depending on the method used. Once the bowl has dried he will be able to re-chuck the bowl and turn it into a beautiful finished piece.

"I enjoy sharing ideas with my fellow woodturners. I always seem to pick up some new technique or secret I didn't know before"

Door Prizes and Raffle Drawing

At each demonstration, every one who signs in on either our member or guest sign-in sheets gets a free door prize ticket and we also offer raffle tickets, $1ea or 6 for $5.  This months prizes included a Woodcraft Polo shirt, Woodcraft hat, Woodcraft Apron, a 2”x8”x8” Purple heart turning blank and a slab of Silver Maple that will yield a 6”x10” bowl. Our door prize was the Cedar ‘Dice Shaker’ made in an earlier demonstration today.
