June 23rd Monthly Demonstration

Rodney LehrBass performed a demonstration on the use of a story board while turning between centers. He began by drawing an outline of a Turkey Call Striker on a 1/4" thick board about 9" x 2", similar to the on in the handout attached. Next, using a straight edge, he transferred all the high and low points on the opposite edge and marked the diameter of each of these points. When his story board was complete he proceeded to turn a striker to the dimensions on the story board. The final product was identical to the story board and was then finished with the Beal buffing system to a high finish. This striker was donated as the Door Prize and won by Bill Sproul.

Show and tell. Fonzie Fitzwater brought a beautiful Spalted Maple bowl with an inflowing rim. Fonzie discussed the techniques he used to turn the piece and his finish of choice. He described how he uses a cut-off tool to partially part off the bowl from his face plate then finish the cut with a pull saw. He then sands the bottom to  prepare the piece for finishing.

Rodney LehrBass performed a demonstration of the One Way Wolverine sharpening system. He demonstrated how to set the angle on the fingernail grind adapter and the flat surface table. We discussed the advantages of using an 8" wheel over the 6" wheel to get a smaller convex surface on the tool. We sharpened a bowl gouge, spindle gouge, round and inside scrapers, roughing gouge and a curved sque chisel.

We held general discussions about the upcoming State Fair, the membership turnout and the new format for our general demonstration. the status of our EOG funds from the AAW and the purchase of demonstration equipment. We will be adding a video monitor to our demonstrations to help view the techniques being demonstrated but we still need a video camera to be donated for this purpose.
