I’m a retired Navy officer and I live in Athens, WV.  I was raised in Iowa and Minnesota but WV seemed to have a better climate and cheaper land so I came here to live when I retired.

I’ve been turning for quite a few years but I never did very much of it until recently because I was using large out-of-round chunks of wood that I salvaged from trees knocked down by storms and my lathe’s lowest speed was so high that it would try to walk out the door whenever I turned anything unbalanced.  It seemed unsafe so I didn’t try it often.  Recently, however, I invested in a lathe with an electronically-variable speed control so now I can turn in safety.  While I still like the big chunks of salvaged wood, I’ve discovered segmented turning and now I prefer turning from wood that I’ve glued up from ordinary hardwood lumber and veneer.
