Harry issued our first club challenge to our membership
with the October Top Turning Contest. He brought some 5 inch long peices of Oak 2' x 2" and showed us how to turn
two different styles of tops. He offered us suggestions while still trying to keep the winning design up his sleeve.
James also turned a top and demonstrated the need
to make sure that your stock had been completely rounded off with a roughing or bowl gouge. His top turned very well
after completion but had a slightly squared side and a rounded one. Everyone got a kick out of this. Below
are a couple more photos of Harry turning tops.

We encourage everyone to participate in our first
challenge. Tops are an easy inexpensive item to turn and are enjoyed by all.

Harry also demonstrated how to turn a rattle.
He started turning the object but did not tell us what he was working on. Many of us try to guess what he was turning
from the peice of black walnut. It was not until it was almost complete that we figured it out. Harry described
how he cut the wood the night before and placed the beads into the wood to create the rattling noise for the rattle.
Once turned he finished the peice with the Beal Buffing System creating a beautiful peice.

Here is a photo of the beautiful black walnut rattle
turned by Harry Newman at the demonstration. We raffled the item off as one of our door prizes.
