March Monthly Demonstration
Turning Items With A Stem

The March Demonstration highlighted turning
items with stems. Harry discussed many items with stems such as goblets, mushrooms and candlesticks. After the
discussion Harry demonstrated how to turn a typical mushroom with and without a natural edge.

The picture above shows Harry beginning to
shape the mushrooms cap. Mushrooms come in a variety of styles and designs in nature so there is no limit to the number
of different types you can turn.

Harry now completes the base. Notice
that he has left the natural edge on the mushroom cap and could also leave the natural barked edge on the base.
These gives the item a very unique look. Cedar is an excellent wood to use to turn small items such as mushrooms and
goblets. Not only does it look good but it will also make you shop smell great as you turn.

Harry watches as Fred tries his hand at turning
a cedar mushroom with a natural edge. We had several members take a turn making a mushroom. We encourage
members to participate in demonstrations. Taking advantage of the Mentoring Program or turning with a friend is a great
way to advance your skills and learn from each other.

Joe also turned a his first mushroom at the meeting.
I think that everyone had a great time and enjoyed watching each other turn. We also had several door prizes that were
given out in the raffle at the end of the meeting.
The West Virginia Woodturner's Association is intended
for all skill levels. Beginners are highly encouraged to attend. Come and build Friendship, Learn, Teach, Share
and improve your turning skills. We meet the fourth Saturday of each month and everyone is welcome. We hope to
see you there.
