May Demonstration

MayDemonstrationPhotos007.jpg

The May Demonstration began with a focus on club business. Two big announcements were made at the meeting.  The first was the news the club would be holding our next three meetings (June, July and August) at Tamarack: The Best of WV in Beckley.  This is very exciting and a chance for our club to recruit new members and expand our base.  Tamarack is the premier artisian center in the State of West Virginia and the first facility of its kind the in the United States.

The next items discussed was the clubs desire to purchase equipment to support learning centers in both Lewisburg and Beckley.  We will be purchasing tools and lathes to operate a turning center in Lewisburg at Bill Sproul's home featuring three lathes and accessories. We will also continue to use Harry Newman's workshop (already well equipped) and two additional lathes for Tamarack.  We will look to purchase the new equipment at the upcoming symposium to take advantage of extra discounts normally offered at the trade show. The turning centers offer a great place for members to meet outside of our monthly demonstrations to turn together, learn from each other and fellowship.

Harry Newman did this month's demonstration showing everyone how to turn a large platter.  The picture above shows Harry with a 12 inch peice of Ambrosia Maple that he has mounted to the face plate and is about to turn.

Harry will begin by turning a tenon and shaping the outside of the platter.  The tenon allows for the bowl to be reversed using a four jaw chuck to later turn the outside.  Once he has finished turning the outside he will sand the bowl.

Once the outside of the platter has been completed and reversed chucked it is time to turn the inside.  The picture above shows Harry making some of the final cuts to give him the completed platter.  The photo below shows him using a power sander to give the platter a smooth surface that is ready to finish with polyurethane.

Several items where brought to Show and Tell ranging from Christmas Ornaments, Bowl, and Pens.  We appreciate everyone displaying items they have turned over the past month to share with other members of the club.
