The West Virginia Woodturners Association provides woodturners in southeastern West Virginia and western Virginia with an opportunity to meet other turners, enhance their skills, and share their skills and interests in woodturning. The alabaster turning demonstration will be presented at the September 23 meeting. Members will be able to purchase 4-5 lb blocks for turning at the subsidized price of $5. The Club Challenge will be to turn an object from alabaster and display it at the November meeting. Fifteen larger pieces (15 lb) have been ordered and will be sold at cost.
Fairs and Shows: August 25, 26, 27 - Appalachian Arts and Crafts fair at the Beckley Convention Center; September 24 - Cranberry Shindig at the Cranberry Mountain Visitor Center; October 13 - Edgewood Craft Fair at the WV State Fairgrounds.
Pearl Buck Project: At the July meeting, Club members picked up sections of the mulberry tree that was planted at Pearl Buck's home on her birthday. So far, they have turned eleven bowls and platters plus 5 bottle stoppers that will be sold at the gift shop at the Pearl Buck home in Hillsboro. Additional turnings will undoubtedly be created over the next few months.
Thirty two members and guests enjoyed enjoyed great food, fellowship, and weather the summer barbecue at Bill Sproul's house on the Greenbrier River in Kiester. Thanks to everyone for bringing delicious side dishes,salads, and desserts and special thanks to Charlie the Grillmaster and Anna for getting all the meats, condiments, and supplies.
In addition to the door prize and raffle drawings, ten members brought in platters they had turned for the June Club Challenge. Top honors went to Bob Nickell, Bruce Brenneman,and Dan Greene.
